Tour Overview
This tour focuses on Minnesota’s North Shore and nearby boreal landscapes, with Duluth serving as our comfortable base throughout the tour. From here, we explore a diverse range of winter habitats within a carefully planned radius, allowing us to maximize birding opportunities while minimizing time spent packing, unpacking, and on long transfers.
From the snow‑draped spruce of Sax–Zim Bog to wide‑open grasslands, each day brings a new rhythm and a new sense of wonder. We’ll search for northern owls, grouse, winter finches, boreal specialties and scan the icy shoreline of Lake Superior for Arctic gulls and winter ducks. Target species include Snowy Owl, Northern Hawk Owl, Great Gray Owl, Boreal Owl, Boreal Chickadee, Spruce, Sharp-tailed and Ruffed Grouse, Canada Jay, Black-billed Magpie, and potentially six species of woodpeckers – Downy, Hairy, Black-backed, Red-bellied, American Three-toed, and Pileated. Also, boreal finches - Pine and Evening Grosbeaks, Redpolls, and White-winged Crossbill are all likely to make an appearance.
Whether you are chasing boreal lifers, hoping for unforgettable owl encounters, or simply eager to experience the stark beauty of the northern season, this tour offers a rare chance to see the winter world at its most alive.
