This tour is suitable for travelers who enjoy full days in the field and are comfortable with light to moderate physical activity. Most outings involve short walks on forest trails, boardwalks, lodge trails and paths, and roadside birding stops. Terrain varies from flat and well‑maintained to uneven, root‑crossed, or muddy, especially after rain. Distances are generally modest, typically 1–3 miles per day, always taken at a relaxed birding pace. Boat‑based outings make several days especially comfortable, though guests should be steady on their feet when boarding or disembarking small boats. Warm temperatures and high humidity are typical of the Caribbean slope, and participants should be prepared for occasional rain. No technical hiking is required, but guests should be able to: walk short distances on uneven surfaces, stand for periods of observation, navigate steps, docks, and lodge trails, and manage early morning starts. We begin each day early to take advantage of peak bird activity, often returning to the lodge during the warmest part of the day for lunch. Afternoon outings are relaxed and focused on specific habitats, birding around the lodge grounds, canopy‑level viewing from the observation tower, or water-based activities such as guided sea kayaking, snorkeling, paddleboarding, or swimming. While the days are full, the rhythm is designed to be comfortable, flexible, and enjoyable, with ample opportunities for photography, wildlife observation, and quiet moments in nature.

The tour price is $3,800 USD per person based on double occupancy. The single supplement is $1,027 USD and will be applied if you request single accommodations, or if you prefer to share a room but no roommate is available and we are unable to pair you with another participant.To register for this tour, please complete an online reservation form. Travel to Panama’s Caribbean region involves a few important logistical and practical details that guests should review before registering. The notes below provide an overview of arrival and departure timing, internal/domestic flights, documentation requirements, and general travel expectations to help ensure a smooth and well‑prepared experience. This tour begins and ends in Bocas del Toro, with guests responsible for booking not only their international flights to Panama City but also domestic flights between Panama City and Bocas del Toro.  Guests must arrive in Panama City (PTY) the day before the tour begins, to ensure timely connection to the early domestic flight from Albrook Gelabert Airport (PAC) to Bocas del Toro. A pre‑tour hotel night in Panama City is required; we recommend the Radisson Hotel Panama Canal near the domestic airport. Pre‑tour hotel night, airport transfer(s), meal(s), and domestic flights are not included in the tour package. On the final day, we return to Panama City via PAC. Please book departing international flights from PTY after 4:00 PM. A valid passport is required for all travelers. Day 1: Arrival to Bocas del Toro International Airport (BOC), Boat to Tranquilo Bay & Birding Onsite. The journey begins with a one-hour domestic flight from Panama City’s Albrook Airport (PAC) to Bocas del Toro, a province and island archipelago in the far western part of the country, right along the Caribbean Sea and close to the Costa Rica border. Guests then board a comfortable lodge boat ride across calm Caribbean waters to Isla Bastimentos, where Tranquilo Bay Eco Adventure Lodge is located. After settling into your rooms, we gather for a brief orientation to the lodge and the week ahead. We then head out for an afternoon of birding around the lodge grounds and canopy tower. As the day winds down, we return to the lodge for a welcome dinner and an overview of the plans for our first full day on the field. Overnight: Tranquilo Bay Eco Adventure Lodge, Isla Bastimentos. Day 2: Isla Popa & Tranquilo Bay. This morning we explore Isla Popa, the second‑largest island in the Bocas del Toro archipelago and one of the richest in wildlife due to its proximity to the mainland. A short, leisurely boat ride brings us into a beautiful gallery forest bordered by mangrove lagoons, a rich introduction to the Caribbean lowlands. We bird primarily by boat, drifting quietly along the mangrove edges and forested shoreline offering excellent views of Keel‑billed and Yellow-throated Toucans, Crimson‑fronted Parakeet, Brown‑hooded Parrot, Slaty‑tailed Trogon, Golden‑hooded Tanager, Pale‑billed, Black-cheeked, and Lineated Woodpeckers, Mangrove Cuckoo, American Pygmy Kingfisher, Swallow‑tailed Kite, and Snowy Cotinga.  The lagoon’s turtle grass beds are also home to fascinating marine life including sponges, starfish, urchins, and Upside‑down Jellyfish. We return to the lodge for lunch and a relaxed midday break. In the afternoon, guests may enjoy downtime, a swim, photography, or additional birding around the lodge grounds. As the afternoon cools and bird activity increases, we head to one of the lodge’s forest trails. One favorite route follows a spring‑fed creek where resident hummingbirds gather to bathe; here we may find species such as Band‑tailed Barbthroat, Purple‑crowned Fairy, and Crowned Woodnymph. Along the creek edges, we may also encounter Red‑capped Manakin, Prothonotary Warbler, and Chestnut‑backed Antbird. A checklist session leads us into dinner, where we share the day’s highlights over a delicious meal. Overnight: Tranquilo Bay Eco-Adventure Lodge, Isla Bastimentos. Day 3: Palo Seco Protection Forest. Our destination today is the vast Palo Seco Protection Forest, a 167,000‑hectare expanse forming one of the most vital components of the La Amistad Biosphere Reserve. This remarkable region, composed of wet Atlantic Forest, foothill habitats, and rich watershed systems, is part of BirdLife International’s Central American Caribbean Slope Endemic Bird Area. It is a hotspot for restricted‑range species and altitudinal migrants such as the Three‑wattled Bellbird and stands among the most important protected areas in the Neotropics. As we bird through this lush landscape, possibilities include Speckled and Emerald Tanagers, Sulphur-winged Parakeet, Bronze‑tailed Plumeleteer, Green Hermit, Dull‑mantled Antbird, Broad-billed Motmot, Band‑backed and Black‑throated Wrens. Mammal sightings may include sloths, Mantled Howler Monkeys, Red‑brocket Deer, squirrels, and several bat species.   Additional lowland specialties we may encounter include Brown Jay, White‑crowned Parrot, Variable Seedeater, Olive‑crowned Yellowthroat, Cinnamon Becard, Long‑billed Gnatwren, Wedge‑billed Woodcreeper, Buff‑rumped Warbler, Crimson‑fronted Parakeet, and Red‑fronted Parrotlet.  In the late afternoon, we work our way back to the lodge through the lowland foothills, scanning for kettles of raptors, Snowy Cotinga, and finishing with views of marsh species such as Green Ibis, Southern Lapwing, Gray-cowled Wood-Rail, White-throated Crake, Blue‑winged Teal, Black‑bellied Whistling‑Duck, and Purple Gallinule. We arrive at the lodge and gather for a beautifully prepared dinner before coming together to review our sightings and outline the plans for the following day. Overnight: Tranquilo Bay Eco-Adventure Lodge, Isla Bastimentos. Day 4: Tierra Oscura & Tranquilo Bay. We begin the morning on a boat ride through Dolphin Bay to the community of Buena Esperanza. From there, we explore a road that winds through Tierra Oscura, offering excellent access to forest edge habitat. The area is defined by lush Caribbean lowland rainforest, quiet mangrove‑lined waterways, and a mix of primary and mature secondary forest that supports exceptional bird diversity. Here we search for Purple‑throated Fruitcrow, Lattice-tailed Trogon, Pied Puffbird, Black‑capped Pygmy‑Tyrant, Pale‑billed Woodpecker, Blue-headed Parrot, Cocoa Woodcreeper, Black-crowned Tityra, Fork-tailed Flycatcher, Montezuma Oropendola, and Keel‑billed and Yellow‑throated Toucans. We also keep an eye out for Green‑and‑black and Strawberry Poison Dart Frogs, various butterflies, sloths, and Mantled Howler Monkeys. We return to the lodge for lunch, and in the afternoon, guests may enjoy photography, additional birding around the lodge grounds, or water-based activities such as guided sea kayaking, snorkeling, paddleboarding, or swimming. As the afternoon transitions into evening, we return to the lodge for a beautifully prepared dinner showcasing the kitchen’s rotating menu. We enjoy a relaxed evening, reviewing the day’s highlights and preparing for the next day’s adventures. Overnight: Tranquilo Bay Eco- Adventure Lodge, Isla Bastimentos. Day 5: San-San Pond Sak Wetlands, Changuinola Beach & Swan’s Cay. Today we enjoy a day of birding by boat through several lush coastal and wetland habitats. The San-San Pond Sak Wetlands, a designated Ramsar site and part of the La Amistad UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, encompass an extraordinary mosaic of ecosystems. The wetlands are rich with lowland species, migrants, raptors, and shorebirds. All six American kingfisher species occur here, along with regional endemics such as Nicaraguan Seed Finch, White‑collared Manakin, Olive‑backed Euphonia, Black‑cowled Oriole, Canebrake Wren, Black-chested Jay, and Three‑wattled Bellbird. Other possibilities include Least Bittern, Northern Jacana, and Bare‑throated Tiger‑Heron. Raptors sightings may include Yellow‑headed Caracara, Bat, Laughing, and Peregrine Falcons, and Osprey. Along the forest edge and grassy margins, we may also encounter Scarlet-rumped and Golden‑hooded Tanagers, Olive‑crowned Yellowthroat, Buff‑throated Saltator, Groove‑billed Ani, Common Squirrel Cuckoo, Olive‑throated Parakeet, Streaked Flycatcher, and Common and Black‑headed Tody‑Flycatchers. Mammal sightings are also possible, Mantled Howler Monkey, Common Raccoon, White‑nosed Coati, Neotropical River Otter, West Indian Manatee, and Bottlenose Dolphin. Changuinola Beach, an important site for migrating and resident shorebirds, is also a nesting grounds for Leatherback and Hawksbill Sea Turtles, and home to Green Iguanas, Basilisk Lizards, Boa Constrictor, Spectacled Caiman, and American Crocodile. We enjoy a picnic lunch on the beach, with sea breeze, shorebirds, and sweeping coastal views. This dynamic river mouth and beachfront may produce Collared and Semipalmated Plovers, Ruddy Turnstones, Sanderlings, Least, Pectoral, and Semipalmated Sandpipers, Lesser Yellowlegs, multiple tern species, and Roseate Spoonbill. In the afternoon, we travel just two miles offshore to the breathtaking reserve of Swan’s Cay (known locally as “Bird Island” or “Isla Pájaros”), home to Panama’s only known breeding colony of Red‑billed Tropicbirds. The island also hosts Brown Boobies and Magnificent Frigatebirds. We make our way back to the lodge in the late afternoon. As evening settles in, we gather for another excellent dinner, enjoying good food after a day rich with sightings. Overnight: Tranquilo Bay Eco-Adventure Lodge, Isla Bastimentos.Day 6: Tranquilo Bay Tower, Trails & Pineapple Hill. We begin the morning at Tranquilo Bay with early birding from the canopy observation tower or the lodge veranda. Today, we enter one of the lodge’s forest trails in search of Chestnut‑backed Antbird, White‑flanked and Dot‑winged Antwrens, Black‑crowned Antshrike, Red‑throated Ant‑Tanager, Tawny‑crested Tanager, and Stub‑tailed Spadebill. A short hike brings us to Pineapple Hill, a small, elevated clearing at the forest edge that serves as an important feeding area for both Neotropical residents and migrants. This is an excellent spot for close views of Golden‑collared and Red‑capped Manakins, three species of honeycreepers (Shining, Green and Red-legged), and a colorful mix of tanagers including Scarlet-rumped, White‑lined, and Summer. We may also encounter Baltimore Oriole, Band‑tailed Barbthroat, Green‑breasted Mango, White‑necked Jacobin, Purple‑crowned Fairy, Scaled Pigeon, Double‑toothed Kite, Roadside Hawk, and the often‑heard but seldom‑seen White‑throated Crake. A different forest trail leads us to a Golden‑collared Manakin lek. Farther along, we reach an area of high canopy favored by Three‑wattled Bellbirds during midday. After lunch, we search the forest floor for the striking Isla Bastimentos Strawberry Poison Frog. This morph of Oophaga pumilio is actively studied onsite by the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute for its evolutionary traits. In the afternoon, we shift our attention to the mangrove forest, looking for several species of herons, Green Ibis, Common Black Hawk, kingfishers, Mangrove Cuckoo, Whimbrel, Prothonotary Warbler, and the resident Mangrove Yellow Warbler. In the evening, we climb the canopy tower once more to witness the return flights of Red‑lored and Mealy Amazons, joined by chattering groups of Blue‑headed Parrots. From this vantage point, we may also enjoy close views of Scaled Pigeon, Black‑crowned and Masked Tityras, Lineated and Black‑cheeked Woodpeckers, Blue‑gray, Palm, and Plain‑colored Tanagers, White‑vented Euphonia, and a variety of flycatchers. We return to the lodge and prepare for dinner, a rewarding way to end the day. Overnight: Tranquilo Bay Eco-Adventure Lodge, Isla Bastimentos. Day 7: Talamanca Range Continental Divide - Fortuna Forest Reserve. Today we embark inland and ascend into the Talamanca Mountain Range. This region, straddling the provinces of Bocas del Toro and Chiriquí, is one of Panama’s premier birding landscapes, home to some of the most extensive remaining montane forest in Central America. The surrounding Fortuna Forest Reserve, established in 1976, is part of the BirdLife International Costa Rica–Panama Highlands Endemic Bird Area. Its rich, distinct avifauna includes numerous regional endemics and range-restricted species. Here we may encounter Red‑faced Spinetail, Ashy‑throated Chlorospingus, Golden‑browed Chlorophonia, Black Guan, Black‑thighed and Black‑faced Grosbeaks, and White-tailed Emerald, among many others. After a picnic lunch we continue birding through the highland forest. This area is rich with mixed flocks and colorful species such as Azure‑hooded Jay, Sulphur‑winged Parakeet, and an impressive array of tanagers including Silver-throated, Bay‑headed, Flame‑colored, White‑winged, Summer, Blue-gray, Hepatic, and Spangled‑cheeked. Additional highlights may include Slate‑throated Redstart, Tropical Parula, Blue‑and‑White Swallow, Golden‑olive and Smoky‑brown Woodpeckers, Elegant and Tawny‑capped Euphonias, Slaty Flowerpiercer, Golden‑bellied Flycatcher, and Collared Trogon. This elevation also offers opportunities for raptors such as Ornate Hawk‑Eagle (rare and unpredictable), Barred Hawk (possible), and Great Black‑Hawk (moderately likely). Other forest specialties we may encounter include Blue‑throated Toucanet, White‑ruffed Manakin, Broad‑billed Motmot, Green Thorntail, Snowcap, and Snowy‑bellied Hummingbird. We also keep an eye out for mammals, including the elusive Tayra, a sleek Neotropical mustelid known for its expressive, wrinkled facial skin. We make our way back to the lodge in the evening. Tonight’s dinner is a special one, offering a chance to reflect on the week’s birding and enjoy our final evening together at the lodge. We complete our last species tally, bringing the trip to a satisfying and memorable close. Overnight: Tranquilo Bay Eco-Adventure Lodge, Isla Bastimentos. Day 8 – Tour Conclusion & Departures from Tranquilo Bay.  After breakfast, we transfer to the Bocas del Toro airport (BOC) for our domestic flight back to Panama City. This flight typically arrives at Albrook Airport (PAC) around midday, allowing ample time to connect to international departures from Tocumen International Airport (PTY). Please schedule homeward flights after 4:00 PM.
