Discover one of Mexico’s most exciting birding regions, where high plateau grasslands, dramatic limestone mountains, tropical lowlands, and the legendary cloud forests of El Cielo Biosphere Reserve come together in a single immersive route. The journey begins on the Saltillo Plateau, a cool, highland plain where wide horizons and native grasslands host one of Mexico’s rarest birds, Worthen’s Sparrow, along with other species adapted to the plateau’s open, semi‑arid terrain such as Golden Eagle, Black-vented Oriole, Burrowing Owl, and Scaled Quail. From here, the land rises sharply into the towering Highrise cliffs south of Monterrey, a dramatic wall of limestone, pine–oak forest, and deep canyons that shelter Maroon‑fronted Parrot, Pine Flycatcher, Colima Warbler, Brown‑backed Solitaire, Slate‑throated Redstart, and Gray Silky-flycatcher.

Descending the eastern slope, the mountains give way to the lush tropical forests of Gómez Farías and El Cielo Biosphere Reserve, one of Mexico’s most storied birding destinations. These humid foothills and cloud forests support an extraordinary mix of species: Blue‑capped Motmot, Ornate Hawk‑Eagle, Common Squirrel‑Cuckoo, Great Curassow, Ivory‑billed Woodcreeper, and Tamaulipas Pygmy‑Owl. The lowlands below add a tropical flourish, with Boat‑billed Heron, Bare‑throated Tiger‑Heron, Double‑striped Thick‑Knee, Ruddy Crake, Sungrebe, Altamira Yellowthroat, Northern Potoo, and Montezuma Oropendola.
