Tour Overview

This tour explores the full breadth of South Texas birding, from the Central Texas Coast to the Rio Grande Valley.   It includes a 3-hour boat trip to Aransas National Wildlife Refuge located on the Central Texas Coast to see Whooping Cranes, a King Ranch tour, and a Santa Margarita Ranch tour.

We begin along the Texas coast with a boat excursion into Aransas National Wildlife Refuge to observe Whooping Cranes and a wide range of waterbirds. From there, we visit the legendary King Ranch, one of the best locations in the United States to search for the Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl and other South Texas specialties. The core of the tour is spent in the Rio Grande Valley, where a remarkable mix of habitats; coastal marshes, subtropical woodlands, thornscrub, and upland desert, supports an exceptional diversity of species.

This tour provides a complete birding circuit of South Texas, bringing together the region’s most productive habitats—from coastal marshes and inland ranchlands to the subtropical woodlands of the Rio Grande Valley. Designed with serious birders in mind, it targets the full range of regional specialties while offering excellent potential for rare and unexpected sightings. This tour delivers a rewarding and efficient way to experience one of North America’s most diverse and distinctive birding regions.
